#Winning

I remember last year when I was covering for Andrew for the Chronicle and I thought the Aeros played a terrific game, had my story three-quarters written. I run downstiars for quotes and ... Yeo is just pissed. He hated the game. And I'm thinking, "Great! REWRITE!"

Well, tonight I got the opposite. I thought the second period was absolute crap and they were extremely lucky to get out of that with just a tie. Was expecting Yeo, or someone, anyone, to acknowledge this. (And then when they didn't, I didn't want to be the jackass to say, "Yeah, you won, good for you. But what about that AWFUL second period?")

But everyone we talked to was full of praise and pride. I mean, obviously limiting shots like that is impressive, but man, all three of us, at the end of the second period, said, "Milwaukee is winning this game tonight. No. Question."

Hey, shows you what we know.

What I do know is that Ally, @TheAnthemSinger, had the tweet of the night. She sits down behind the Aeros' net and often has signs with her: "NEW SIGN SIDE 1: Stay Hackett, stay. Good goalie. SIDE 2: Bad Goalie."

Seriously, this going behind the net and standing around back there in a crisis of indecision is going to burnnnnn like a thousand suns when it results in a goal. I am literally gonna have a stroke and die one of these nights watching that.

Seems like a fairly new thing, too. Looks like a Tordjman move, come to think of it. Stop doing that.

Also, in the third, I said, "Man, I'd LOVE a McMillan goal right about now." BOOM, I really DID have you in the pool, Big Mac! He's photogenic AND clutch. Can't really ask for much more from a hockey player.

I told the boys that if the Aeros lost tonight, I was going to do a stick figure of Kassian sitting in the stands in a suit in my usual "stick figures as a form of protest" way. Glad I didn't have to do that, because I wanna go to bed ASAP. And despite Bulmer passing it right to the stick of an Admiral when entering the zone on the first solid offensive chance I saw for him, he did seem to have more of an impact tonight, playing more minutes, etc.

Finally, props to the Aeros staff for the really funny Billy Madison clip. Totally went top shelf on that one. WTG.

Anyway, see you crazy kids tomorrow night. Bring your outside voices.

Hackett looked very uncomfortable and indecisive last night playing the puck behind the net. I don't know if the communication was there or not due to changes in lines. Speaking of communication I thought the communication level between the boys was horrific during the game. It was if they didn't know what to expect from each other. I think we got out of this one by the skin of our teeth. I don't think the boys should be satisfied with their play even though they came out on top. Since there hasn't been a song dedication in a while I'll offer up this one about last nights play:

As the ONLY commentor who has challenged your initial assessment that the "goalies are equal" (Ref: Ms Conduct pre-series POST), I note that even Coach Yeo has begun to give Smith his due (last night's quotes.."he is obviously a very good goalie"...).

So is Hackett, but the Aeros simply cannot win this SERIES unless Hackett can improve his performance, starting tonight.

Forget the most UNforgiving stat: Smith SV % (93.5...315 saves) v. Hackett (barely 90.0...154 saves) with the low number of Hackett saves, in Calder Play, largely attributable to the Aeros superior offense (SOG advantage 117-80), an outstanding PK (94%), and outsized puck possession time.

Totally agree with B2B that Hackett was indecisive (mental) throughout the game and agree with you that his frequent time (mental) "lingering" behind the net (with ADs players a few feet away) is a cause of GREAT concern...and this from a technical "formula goalie"???

Lacking the athleticism (of Smith) to move and recover quickly, Hackett MUST be more careful to protect his TEAM, if the Aeros are to have a chance to advance to the next round.

Go Aeros!!!

I think I was thinking of them more in technical terms, but obviously the extra year of experience Smith has is coming to bear here. He's much more even keeled and better at reading plays than Hackett at this point.

That said, the second goal was NOT on Hackett last night. Major deflection and very few goalies would have snagged that.

The first, I blame on his positioning. The vertical-horizontal stance (VHS) he was in during the beside-the-net scramble before the puck got centered in the slot is one that's very difficult to explode out of the way he needed to to center up for that shot. That's one of many reasons I hate that position for goalies.

So, yeah, Hackett is as good a goalie technically as Smith. In fact, they're very similar in style and it didn't surprise me to learn they were partners in junior. But Smith's added experience definitely undermines my assessment of their equality in this series.

I was wrong. You win. ;)
