Off day Misc.

Bad stat of the day:
The Aeros have points in four straight games, but they have blown two-goals leads in three of them that went down as overtime losses. I cannot recall a time when the Aeros have blown three two-goal leads in a four-game span.

Good stat of the day:
The Aeros have points in four straight games and nine of 12 overall to stay right in the thick of the playoffs race. The Aeros 40th game is tomorrow, and they have a favorable schedule this weekend against the IceHogs, who will have to play in San Antonio Saturday. The Aeros have just the two home games.

And to close this up, here is a video of an amazing goal by Derek Jeter, who now, apparently, plays for the New York Islanders:

Seems like ONE point is better than a win.
What IS wrong with a tied game? Soccer does it.

I don't think there is anything wrong with a tied game. But the marketing people that are in the know, say fans prefer a shootout to a tie.

And that is the way it is going to be for the foreseeable future.

Well, for one thing, soccer sucks. Seriously, is their a better cure for insomnia than soccer? So I see no reason why hockey should do anything like soccer. After all, football games don't end in ties, and neither do baseball games or basketball games.

While the point system should could use some fixing, there's nothing wrong with overtime or the shootout. And besides, if the game is just going to end in a tie, then why bother playing?

So you can watch the goalies... duh.

Football games CAN end in a tie, last time I checked.

Tied games suck from the standpoint that no one "wins" ... but the current system does not allow for a truly fair way to determine a winner.

A shootout is a 50-50 proposition, just like a coin flip, but, to be fair, is far less entertaining unless Matt Hasselbeck is involved.

Trying to compare soccer to any sport in the U.S. is pointless. Americans, myself included, don't "get it. But it is the No. 1 game everywhere else.

If you asked 100 hockey players if they think a shootout is a fair way to decide a hockey game, most of them would say no, "but it's good for the fans, I guess."

That is why the playoffs don't end in ties. Or shootouts ... or even 4x4 hockey for that matter.

yes, and THAT is what makes the play offs so exciting and LOOONG!

My apologies. NFL games can end in ties. But they keep playing OT in college football until somebody wins.

Andrew J. Ferraro said...

Speaking of which, why has the NFL not gone away from sudden death (and more than 15 minute) overtimes?

Field goal kicking contest anyone?

John Royal said...

Because if they went with a field goal kicking contest the Texans would never win a game.

I thought we weren't supposed to watch re-runs until summer. The last few games, the Aeros keep re-running the same show, over and over, like that Tony Robbins infomercial years ago. Or like the Discovery Channel or History Channel anymore. Same dang shows over and over ad nauseum, but I digress.

I'm getting sick of hockey re-runs. The Aeros go up by two, then they A) stop skating, B)turn off their brains, C) have a goalie melt-down, or D) something bad happens, like the arena gets hit by a meteorite, all of which allow the oyher team to score between two and six in short order.

If the Aeros make it to OT, it lasts two minutes or to the other team's second shot on goal, which ever comes first, and viola - OTL.

I'm getting more than just a little impatient with this.

John- there are three better cures for insomnia than soccer on TV - golf, bowling, and poker. Baseball is also a good cure, and on half the year.

When do we get Scandella and Hackett, anyway?

Word verification "nofla" - as in the BCS champion this year.

I love hockey, but soccer (football elsewhere) is the world's number 1 sport. You should watch some games when the World Cup starts in June. On the other hand, baseball...zzzzzzzzzz

John Royal said...

God, I don't care about the rest of the world. I don't live in the rest of the world. Soccer bores me even more than televised golf.

And we're all going to have to disagree, but as much as I like hockey, I would give up hockey in a minute if I could do nothing but watch baseball, then I would do nothing but watch baseball.

The world's most boring sport is cricket followed in closely by baseball and american football.

I hope the Aeros can get two points tomorrow. It would be nice to start a long winning streak. Next 4 games are against Rockford.

Apparently: The 'rest of the world' is united against baseball ;-)!

There must be a reason...IT SUCKS!!!

John Royal said...

Yes, soccer does suck. When they do away with that stupid extra time and the flopping and the 1-0 games that are known as high-scoring classics, I might get into it.
