View from the Press Box (Aeros 4, Moose 1)

The Aeros played three good periods Thursday and were rewarded with a 4-1 win over their long time AHL/IHL rivals.

Nice to see Noreau on the scoresheet, and Danny "Forsberg" Irmen in highlight reel form. The offensive play of the game to me was when Clayton Stoner rushed toward the net only to dish over to Irmen for the easy tap-in.

For a second there, I thought I was watching Paul Coffey and Dino Ciccarelli (circa 1996).

That goal was good, even though the Moose would even it up when Rosa converted a rebound late in the opening frame.

Heather and John have more on the game, but below is our post-game video blog.
Things that stand out to me after this game are:

  • 0-for-43
  • Welcome back, Anton
  • Good to see more than one goal go in
  • Penalty kill was methodical and good
  • Temperature was very warm at ice level, and the Aeros used it
  • The Aeros need more from Duncan Milroy, and Ryan Lannon (healthy scratch)
  • How many sticks in Nate Smith going to break trying to hit a one-timer?
  • Irmen is on pace for 28 goals this year (but call-ups to Minny will hurt this)
  • JM Daoust is on pace for a career-high 28 helpers this year

It was a very good effort by the Team, playing KC's SYSTEM with discipline, solid forechecking and capitalizing on several key 5 on 5 defensive lapses by the out-hustled Moose.

It is noteworthy that the on-ice leadership came from the dependable CHARACTER guys, Irmen, Stoner, Daoust, snd Noreau, backed up by another solid, consistent effort by Khudobin (despite not having played for almost 10 days due to the WILD call-up).

Your continuing commentary about the Aeros inability to connect the dots, offensively (particularly, on the man-advantage) highlights this Team's major problem. KC states that this team, thus far, has created more opportunities on the PP than either of the two prior year teams, yet has a much higher futility rate. Hopefully, the "new" offense (DiSalvatore, Milroy, Smith, and Gillies) will begin to step-up on their shifts, as Zingoni has done, to get the Team over this hurdle.

Grest game, I think the 1,000 or so people there really enjoyed seeing the Aeros play well on both sides of the ice.

Anton scared me to death when he went off the ice for a sixth attacker on a non-penalty. Usually, Anton scares me to death with his uncontrolled rebounds.

Also, hats off to the Moose, who showed they are not only a class outfit but smart as well for having a 42 year-old as captain. Take that, Brett Favre!

But where in the AHL ruled does it state that 3 Stanley Cup rings entitles you to get away with hooking?

There ya go, Drew, FC saw Dimples leave his net, too. You aren't crazy! At least... in that way.
