Close your eyes and imagine the oldest, grittiest, loudest, most intimate hockey arena you can think of. Beer and blood and taunting and fights in the hallways and more beer.
That's where the Aeros played tonight. And like the honey badger, who suffers a hundred stings to reach in there and get what he wants from the beehive, the Aeros just carried on playing their game to get the 2-1 win and take the series lead.
An early goal by the Aeros, where DiSalvatore jammed a rebound over Lehner's leg pad (bad goal) took a little of the air out of the building, but not much. Still early and these BSens can score like crazy, right?
The first period was fairly even, but in the second, the Aeros found their stride and took it to Binghamton pretty hard, putting 11 shots to Bingo's 5. Prosser scored the second goal, punching the puck in during a wild scramble in Lehner's crease about midway through the period.
Things got crazy in the third, as Bingo scored early in the period on a power play. Hackett argued that it was tipped in with a high stick. It was most certainly tipped in but I didn't see tip itself, but I heard it and it was obvious Hackett was expecting it to go somewhere else entirely.
The irony, at least to me, is that the Aeros worked a ton on executing tip-ins today (not defending them) at morning skate. Oh well. The hockey gods are funny like that.
Hackett was VERY good in this game though and had terrific visual attachment to the puck and didn't worry about saves looking pretty. He just got whatever he could in front of everything. Really big game for that kid and one to be proud of.
Later in the third, with the game 2-1, the BSens had their own mad scramble on the net and the puck hit the crossbar and down to the goal line, bouncing around a bit. Hackett covered it and I guess it looked like it crossed the line as he covered it, or maybe he knocked it across or something.
Anyway, Koho was pretty much standing on the back of the net watching this play transpire and emphatically waved no goal. I don't think anyone had a better view, so it's sort of hard to argue. Everyone I've talked to said, "Ehhhhh, it LOOKED over... but I didn't have a great view." So *shrug* who knows without replay in this league.
The final minute was absolutely bananas. They pulled Lehner with a minute left, at one point he had to go back in net, but mostly he was out and that was the longest minute ever. Lots of crazy scrambles around the Aeros net, but somehow they were keeping it out. At one point, one of the Aeros was laying across the goal line to keep it out. Didn't think that was legal but they got away with it.
It was seriously insane and exciting. Just glad it worked out like it did. It was a phenomenal effort by the Aeros for the entire 60 minutes. I'm exhausted just thinking about how hard they worked out there.
I've been a little concerned about O'Sullivan lately, but he was back tonight and maybe better than ever. He was fantastic with the puck, but even more so, he made some seriously unbelievable defensive plays that saved a lot of bacon.
All the guys do that stuff, but when you have a guy with hands and ability like Sully, sometimes those guys get a pass. But he's not taking it.
The games are getting chippier for sure. They're developing quite a little dislike for each other out there. And props to the Aeros for not reacting to it and getting into penalty trouble.
Because there's a ton of media up here, the press conferences go quite long and, at least for one night, I'm opting for sleep instead of the bar. So, once I figure out how to upload audio to this darn page, I'll just leave it at that for you to enjoy.
Meanwhile, let's just get this posted so you have someplace to comment for now....
Okay, here's the audio. Only way I could figure out to get it going was to make it a YouTube movie. Had to pick a picture. Didn't have any of Kleinendorst, sooooo.... Brusty it is.

A few things from the bingo perspective...On the no goal, i had a great view and it didnt look like it was in, hard to argue with the ref when he is literally(sp) standing over the net....message boards seem to confirm there was no replay that showed it in.....as for the game itself, again the aeros put there mark on the game, we wanna play 5-3 , you wanna play 2-1 and all 3 games have been your style..... personally i think your trapping style sets hockey back to the pre lockout era but it aint boring if you win, so i guess ill just tip my hat to the aeros.... as for the atmosphere in the arena, it was ready to explode but we gifted you guys the first goal and it took the air out.... last 5 minutes were breath taking and we hit 2 crossbars and a post, we have never gotten to many breaks from the hockey gods in 38 years of prohockey, tonight being no exception......as for the post game antics it was an embarrassement for the town for a bunch of idiots to throw things on the ice and at the officials, and i have not seen it more than a handful of times attending games for 4 decades, dont remember the last time it happened.... heard about a fight in the hallway also, didnt see it but also a blackeye. still think the series is going 7 games, thats just the way we roll....enjoy your stay, looks like the next few days are calling for fantastic weather
A busy night for all great hockey fans.....
. A Netminders CLINIC in Game 1 at Vancouver (between Tim Thomas and Robert Luongo), with the Canuck's Torres potting the winning goal in the last 18 seconds of the Third.
. The CHL Presidents Cup taken by the Bossier-Shreveport MUDBUGS in a Game 7 Road Win...unfortunately, defenseman Mitch Love (injured reserve) was not on the ice to lift the Cup...the Aeros (2008-9 season) record-holder for fighting Majors (34).
. Matt Hackett's BEST game as an Aero...with some helpful mentoring from Coach Mason...home-ice advantage shifts back to the Aeros.
Go Aeros!!!
Thanks, Ms C, for the report and posting the audios. These two teams have two very classy head coaches!
As THE enemy fan in the stands last night I was duly impressed with Bingo fans' graciousness towards me. Completely different from those who threw stuff on the ice. One guy came down in the 2nd intermission and asked if I was from Houston because he had tickets to games 4 and 5 that he couldn't use and would have offered them to me.
I didn't see the fight, but I purposely waited a couple minutes to head to the concourse not wanting to present a target of opportunity (once the throwing of stuff ensued.)
It was loud, enthusiastic and Senators-centric in the stands - as it should have been.
I thought it was a great atmosphere for a hockey game.
I think Kleinendorst stated it perfectly. It's going to come down to who plays their system the best. Count me a fool but I don't think there will another game in Houston.
Would have loved to seen this game AND heard Joe O's call , but #%}|+£ €£#% &$@ AHLlive dropped the Houston feed in the third period and lost the feed entirely the last two minutes!! Can't the get things right when all they have is a single game? That's unbelievable as assigning Koho and Banfield to officiate a game in the finals.
Anyway, congrats to the guys, and regardless of what happens this weekend, it looks like we will have some form of live hockey entettainment in Houston next week.
Yeah, I had to get through the fight to get down to where the presser was and was a little worried about you, Nick, but not a ton. I know most Bingo fans aren't like that, and I'm sure it was frustrating, but Koho really did have the view, so.... oh well.
I consider the garbage on the ice punishment to the ice crew for being late with the zam at practice yesterday. Haha....
Oh my., well done!
Keep it up AEROS!
Bring the winning of the Cup back to Houston!
And to the *O2*: keep the infusions going!
Thanks, Ms. C, for the write-up and audio clips. Keep up the good work.
My family ordered the game and tried to watch it online from AHL live. We were upset about missing those key moments. (Side note...I finally learned how to complain using online chat support and our account was refunded.) Thankfully, we didn't miss too much of the game audio because of one lesson that I unfortunately had to learn...Keep 1070 AM online muted in the background for the MANY times when the technical difficulties occur. Of course, I would rather not have to do this, but I have missed too much when watching online!
Anyway, back to the positive side...Our boys played a great game. Keep up the great work, Aeros!!!
@AOH:
AHL Live is crap......I didn't even consider doing the playoff package from the poor service I got through the year from the "season pass". I felt it was a waste of money. I'd rather listen to Joe on KNTH. It's less frustrating. The only thing I miss is chatting with other fans during the game.
