In a do-or-die game, with the existence of the franchise hanging by a thread, the Aeros came through with the 4-1 win over the Grand Rapids Griffins in Grand Rapids tonight, tying the series at 2-2.
Mike Condon came up with the Darcy Kuemper-esque game, stopping 41 of 42 Grand Rapids shots. The Aeros meanwhile had only 20 shots on the night, but scored on four of them. Mikael Granlund, Chad Rau, Steven Kampfer, and David McIntyre got the goals for the Aeros -- McIntyre's being an empty netter to ace the game and Granlund and Kampfer both scoring on the power play. Justin Fontaine assisted on three of the goals and Brian Connelly had two assists.
So the team's not dead yet. There's still the chance they're coming home again, if they can pull off the win in Grand Rapids tomorrow night.

Does anybody know what the odds are of an nhl or another ahl franchise coming to houston within the next decade? Is a phoenix to houston scenario just wishful thinking?
Until another arena is built, most likely outside the city limits the odds are not good. The only bright spot is that the SugarLand Ice Facility(formerly the Aeros practice facility) is in the process of buying a Junior team and planning to rennovate the facility to accomodate attendance. I am looking forward to Junior hockey, it can be very fun to watch.
It's my belief that hockey in Houston city proper is not going to happen anymore. For the fourth largest city in the U.S., we sure are shorthanded when it comes to arenas capable of housing a pro level hockey team (one). Even Corpus Christi has more hockey arenas (two) than Houston (one). And Houston ain't building one either, so it will have to be outside the city. According to a comment in this article in the Houston Business Journal, the Aeros were in discussions to build a facilty in Sugar Land, but I've heard nothing else about it. Not even sure they're still considering it in Sugar Land.

Aeros are still alive this year though, and hopefully can squeeze out a win tonight in Grand Rapids. Go Aeros!!
I don't think Houston will ever see professional hockey at all unless the city leaders get behind an effort to bring a team here and that is not likely to happen. Also, I have heard interviews of NHL leadership and they have no intention of either expanding the league or relocating teams. The Phoenix Coyotes might be an exception but they say cities (I can't remember precisely which ones) in Canada would probably be the first choices. Houston handed over way too much power to Less Alexander who has proven he is not interested in Houston, only himself.

The above are pretty much correct. I would add that the HSA is on shaky grounds constitutionally (Texas Constitution) as the enabling legislation amounts to direct payment of taxes to an individual (Alexander) and also the non-compete clauses against privately constructed facilities.
However, you would need millions of dollars to fight this, plus you are challenging the Good Old Boy power structure, meaning you risk waking up in a ditch someday.
Can someone organize a bus trip to Austin?

If by some miracle the Aeros pull this off (and I hope they do) they will play the Stars next.

Sadly, I am afraid to say we will end this miserable year seeing a great former Aero getting fired as a head coach.
